Award-winning author DP Denman writes character-driven contemporary romance about gay men. Her stories are real and intense but resolve in endings that make people want to read the book again and again.
She lives among the moss and trees of the Pacific Northwest with a rambunctious pair of fur babies.

In her spare time, she is a dedicated LGBTQIA rights activist. To support the quest for equality, 25% of royalties from every book go to LGBT charities.

Welcome to ARe’s Behind the Books, D.P.! We’re so happy to have you as our guest today!
I’m thrilled to be here, Cassi!
To start off, can you tell us who some of your favorite authors were as a young reader?
Let’s see. I had so many favorites. The highlight of my life as a kid was going to the library to pick out new books.
I guess the one that sticks out the most is Laura Lee Hope’s Bunny Brown and His Sister Sue Series. My true addiction to reading began with those books. I couldn’t put them down! Those were the first stories I read that didn’t have many illustrations. They relied entirely on my imagination rather than someone else’s drawings. It took the characters to a new level.
Russell Hoban was another favorite. I loved his Frances stories. I can still visualize that character walking through her little badger house singing about bread and jam.
You’ve written eight books, but the novels you want to talk about today are “Blue” and “Rhythm and Blue.” Can you tell us a little about what makes Blue so special and what you admire most about him as a hero?
I admire Blue’s resilience. It doesn’t matter how bad things get. He doesn’t give up, and his sarcasm can be very entertaining. He’s a little obstinate and a bit mouthy. That combination is always fun to write.
Not giving up–that’s an important quality for a hero…and a writer. I’m curious about your writing process. We hear a lot about plotters (authors who outline and plan before writing), and pantsers (authors who write by the seat of their pants). Where are you at on that spectrum?
I’m a plotting pantser. I identify the five main turning points in a story and then let the characters fill in the details. Sometimes they follow the turning points. Sometimes the end is a surprise.
So you know where the story is going but give the characters room to change their minds and make decisions as they go? Very cool, and it seems to be working great for you! What more can we expect from the Blue series in the future?
Book two, Rhythm and Blue, just came out February 5th. Book three, Fade to Blue, will be out later this year. Book four doesn’t have a title yet. It’s still pulling itself together in the back of my head.
Okay, just for fun… If you could have one superpower what would it be and why?
Speedreading! I would love to be able to devour a book in an hour and run off to apply what I learned. Skimming works as fast, but not as well.
